How to Build a Daily Tech Briefing Routine That Takes 10 Minutes

A step-by-step system for getting your daily tech news in 10 minutes flat — without the anxiety, overwhelm, or wasted time.

The average tech professional checks news 4-6 times per day. Each check-in costs 15 minutes of focus recovery. That's 1-2 hours of productive time lost daily — just to stay updated.

A daily tech briefing routine solves this. One dedicated session, 10 minutes, everything you need to know. Here's how to build yours.

The 10-Minute Briefing Template

Every morning briefing follows the same three-phase structure. No decisions, no rabbit holes, just consumption.

Phase 1: Scan (3 minutes)

Open your briefing tool and scan all headlines. Don't click anything. Your goal is to identify which 2-3 stories need your attention today. Everything else gets a mental note and moves on.

  • Read each headline + AI summary
  • Rate each story: Important vs Interesting vs Noise
  • Pick 2-3 stories to read deeply
  • Everything else: acknowledged and forgotten

Phase 2: Deep Read (5 minutes)

Read the 2-3 stories you flagged. For each one, ask: What happened? Why does it matter? Do I need to do anything?

If a story doesn't trigger action, don't save it. If it does, add it to your task list immediately.

Phase 3: Log (2 minutes)

Write down one thing you learned and one thing you're watching. This turns passive consumption into active learning. Use a notes app, a Google Doc, or even a physical notebook. The act of writing solidifies understanding.

Tools for a 10-Minute Briefing

The tool you use matters less than the routine. That said, tools that batch stories and provide AI summaries make the scan phase dramatically faster. Trace is designed for exactly this workflow: one daily brief, multi-source summaries, no infinite scroll.

Whatever tool you choose, the key is consistency. Do it at the same time every day. Morning is best — before your first meeting, before Slack, before email. Your brain is fresh and the news is current.
